Informational Speech
the real issue facing the world today is that the freedom of expression, thought, and opinion, are being suppressed. To make it connect to Canada, this happens in the universities. Much more often than not. The reasons the people in charge of the groups responsible for such are unsatisfactory, saying that the people they censor are using “adversarial tone” and making a hostile environment for the students around them. To help brings this to light, look no further than Waterloo Ontario. Wilfred Laurier University, a pro life group putting on a peaceful and respectful presentation of information to generate discussion without the use of graphic images or violent words. In the afternoon however, the Diversity and Equity Office, put up a sign saying “warning: Anti-choice display ahead”. Christine Schuknecht said “I was dumbfounded. Why was a warning needed? We were peaceful and polite.” (Schuknecht), in response to this. After this was done, students were then aggressive towards the pro life group, spitting on their flag. The pro life group kept calm, and impressed the campus guards with this, but the student union decided that the best way to avoid this was not to try to help people reason more, but to simply say that any ideas that went against what the population decided, was the equivalent to outlawed. The student union meant to represent and support the entire student population, decided that the voices of the few are not allowed to be heard. But as if to create an opposite, the minority decided to try and “bully” if you will, a professor in Toronto and force him to use alternate pronouns. This is not an example of the minority being pushed around, but the majority being pushed by the minority. Jordan Peterson is a professor of psychology at the university of Toronto. In September of 2016, he had released a video lecture series about how he “saw a campus culture where "social justice warrior, left-wing radical political activists" ran rampant.” (Murphy). The reason he was against using them is because he felt that even though under the charter trans people are protected against discrimination by their gender, he finds that it is unreasonable to expect the entire population to limit their words because of a smaller amount of people. Jordan Peterson defends his position by arguing that “terms like "gender identity' and "gender expression" are too broad, are the "propositions of radical social constructionists," and are being used to bully opponents into submission.” (Murphy). It comes off as no surprise in all honesty that these things happened. In this day, too many people are being silenced. Being forced by either the majority or minority. It seems that both sides feel the other doesn't deserve to say what they want, If you will. But in when looking at the big picture, the irony of it all is that in a world wanting to make everyone happy and included, it is excluding and silencing more people than the people gaining a voice. |
